What is Regenerative Medicine?

Regenerative MedicineUnexplained pain can get in the way of daily life. Whether you’ve recently been injured or suffer from chronic pain or degenerative issues, an increase in pain or other symptoms should be investigated immediately. If traditional treatment methods haven’t worked, then you may want to start looking into regenerative medicine.

Defining Regenerative Medicine

Regenerative medicine is most easily defined as a non-invasive, alternative treatment option for those suffering from chronic pain, injuries, or degenerative conditions such as degenerative disc disease. These treatments are offered by medical professionals as well as chiropractic professionals.

There are several different types of regenerative medicine available. Two of the most common treatments include:

  • Stem Cell Therapy: Stem cells are known as the body’s building blocks. They are the only cells in the body with the ability to become new tissue cells, which can help speed up the body’s natural healing process.
  • PRP Therapy: Also known as platelet-rich plasma therapy, this utilizes the body’s platelets (found in the blood) to help repair damaged tissues and joints.

The goal of these alternative treatment methods is to jumpstart the body’s innate healing process to help relieve pain associated with chronic conditions, such as arthritis, and help speed up the healing process associated with injuries or post-surgical recovery.

Benefits of Regenerative Medicine

The benefits of regenerative medicine vary by the individual and their reasons for treatment. However, some of the most common benefits often include:

  • Pain relief
  • Strengthening of affected muscles and tendons
  • Increased range of motion and functionality as the healing process begins
  • Speedier healing process

How Does Regenerative Medicine Work?

These are considered out-patient treatments that only take a few moments to complete.

Depending on the treatment method chosen, you’ll have to have some blood drawn, especially in the case of PRP therapy. In this particular case, the platelets will be separated from the rest of your blood to create a concentrated solution that will then be reinjected into the particular area that needs treatment.

For example, if you have a chronic knee condition, your PRP injection will be placed directly in the knee. This allows the material to get right to work and jumpstart your body’s healing processes in that specific area. In the case of stem cell injections, the cells will be injected right into the damaged joint or tissue to regrow damaged tissue.
